You could have quite a treasure there seeing that he is credited as the one who started what became the Roman Church or as it's called today, the Roman CAT-holic church

Constantine's coins for the most part aren't particularly valuable. He made a zillion of them, and unless yours is particularly rare, it typically would be worth $20-$50. I have two in good condition that were minted in 300AD London for which I paid $25 and $43.

You'll find that Constantine the Great's family is a pain. He was the most uncreative human beaing to ever live when it came to naming children.

Father: Constantine I

Sons: Constantius II, Constans, Constantine II. His daughter was Constantina.

Grandfather: Constantine I's father was Constantius I.

Have fun.:banghead:

I have a bunch of uncleaned coins. I probably will o an electrolysis on them. It destroys the patina, but I am impatient.

Flew in and out of Khartoum ( sp ? sorry it is late ) Sudan
years ago just after we blew the snot outta Libya...
They told the " Americans" that it would be safer to stay on the plane during the layover...how comforting...
Getttin that way a lot of places nowadays I am afraid.
Would like to see Tripoli though.

I am rather good on coins less than 300 years old. I appreciate the ones machine stamped - not HAND STAMPED - or HAMMER STAMPED. The technology came around 300 years ago.

There are some VERY good books on ROMAN COINS.

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw...0&Go.y=0&Go=Go

Suggest strongly you try your local library first - then the internet.

Lastly, if this is going to be more than a hobby of sorts - build up a great library.

Go to EBAY too - search

Roman Coins (books).

Best wishes,

HS

PS I love the Roman coins for history - I'll be in Rome 12-1-07, in fact.

My two constantine coins minted in London 300AD. I also have a widow's mite 100BC, a Tiberius denarius (the biblical "tribute penny"), a Vespasian denarius with a reverse showing a Jewish slave woman at the base of a trophy pole with the logo "Judea", and a Nero denarius (cut off Paul's head, crucified Peter, and had Christians killed en mass in the colosseum).

Yes that is an excellent book. Gore Vidal is a true American and a fantastic writer of fiction. He's gay though and he sort of plays up some of the late Roman decadence more than I would have liked. But thats a small complaint for a great book.

A book of lesser literary quality, but greater historical relevance, is Michael Curtis Ford's book on Julian, Im not sure the title.

E Michael Jones wrote an article on Julian Apostas and St John Chrysostom, for people interested in Roman Catholic/Orthodox theology and "the jewish question." in 2004, September issue Culture Wars, which you can order here

I have some of these old Roman Coins...not in great shape, but you can see the pictures (after we cleaned them up). Yeah, not worth much, but pretty cool to have wondering who held them!
I'd have to dig them out and look at them again...I just bought a bag of sand (he he he) that said it could have some in it, it did, a few good ones, a few bad ones, a few so so. None in really good shape, one has a hole through it like someone used it for a necklace of something. They are pretty cool though the way they put the pictures on and everything.

Looks like a coin from one of the Gallic empire usurpators:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallic_Empire

Definitely doubly struck!!

My best guess would be TETRICUS II

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetricus_II

http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/sear/s3190.html#RIC_0270

(He was one of the only one to appear unbearded, and it's probably not a coin from Aurelianus, because of the minting quality of the coin)
